We all forget our keys on occasion, but what do you do when you can’t find them? If you don’t have any spare keys or helpful friends nearby, there are other options. Unlock your door with a bobby pin.
Lock picking is an art that some people take years to perfect. But with the right tools and the right technique, it’s possible to pick most locks with just about any household object, like paperclips or bobby pins.
This article will teach you how to unlock a door with a bobby pin in less than 3 minutes. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is!
What You Need
To complete this project, you’ll need the following items:
- Regular bobby pins. (You can pick up some at Walmart for about $1.)
- Blank key fob. (Included in most car keys.)
- A lock that you want to pick open.
For this project, we’ll use a #1-3 combination. Pick any combination of numbers between 1 and 3 that you like best. Once you’ve done that, flip your bobby pin over and put it on top of the key fob or back in the door. Now lift it up and turn it until it clicks into place. You should hear a satisfying “click” sound when you do so — don’t forget to check your work before leaving!
The key to unlocking a door with a bobby pin is creating the right sequence of actions, like this:
- Place your object of choice (for example, a paper clip) on the outside of the lock.
- Hold your hand over the paper clip to hold it above the lock and not touch it.
- Start moving your hand across the lock in an arc to unlock it.
- When you’re done, remove your hand from the paper clip and place it exactly where you originally held it while trying to unlock the lock.
Open the door with a bobby pin
When you open the door, it’s important to be as quiet as possible. This makes it much more difficult for your intruder to hear you. You can use a soft and quiet sound like music to help mask the noise of your key turning in the lock.
If you’re not doing anything that’s likely to draw attention, or if you’re fighting an intrusion, try picking the lock with a bobby pin.
Picking a lock is easy. Start by putting on some gloves and carefully placing your first finger on the door handle, pressing against it until you feel resistance. Next, place your second finger around the same side of the handle, holding onto it firmly. Now slowly move your third finger toward the top of the pin until you feel something give way and turn easily when driving it back toward its starting position. With all this information in mind, here’s how to pick a normal door:
Gaining Access to a Door
The first time you try to open your door with a bobby pin, you’ll probably think that it’s going to be a challenge. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to gain access to any door in no time.
This is because:
- Your body is designed for this task
- You can hold the object correctly and twist it as needed
- The force applied is proportionate to the strength of the pin and your body movement.
The easiest way to open a door is by using the bobby pin technique. All you need are two bobby pins and your hands! First, take one of the bobby pins in hand and twist it into a loop. Next, place that loop over the doorknob latch on top of your handle (so that when you turn it, it will push up against the knob). Now use your other hand to grab both ends of the twisted wire with fingers spread evenly around them, so they don’t slip off. Twist until there’s enough tension for this part to stay put without slipping–then pull out with an upward motion while turning back towards yourself. This should pop open any lock or bolt mechanism on most if done correctly.
